Celebrating R Staff – May 2024

It’s Friday which is reason enough to celebrate but please take a moment to join us as we recognize two of our staff, Lieutenant Jamie Hendrix and Jimmy Camacho, on their recent accomplishments!

Lieutenant Jamie Hendrix, Rutgers University–Newark Police Department

The Rutgers College Class of 1962 Presidential Public Service 2024 Awardee

Lt. Hendrix received this honor for her, “distinguished service to the university and Newark community in both professional and academic roles, including her stellar work as the Commander of the Community Policing Unit for the RUPD Newark Division; her commitment to student success through her courses on the American juvenile justice system, adolescent personality, and behavioral development, and leadership in the criminal justice profession; and her tireless public service to various organizations throughout New Jersey.”

Lt. Hendrix is a Rutgers University–Newark alumna, a coadjunct professor in the Honors Living-Learning Community, and of course an RU-N staff member!  In her own words, “From my youth, I have understood and embraced the mission of serving and assisting individuals, often those who are unseen or unheard.”  Rutgers University–Newark and our entire community are a better place due to Lt. Hendrix’s dedication and service.

Jimmy Camacho, Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Enrollment Services, School of Criminal Justice

Rutgers Leadership Academy 2023-2024

Jimmy completed the Rutgers Leadership Academy (RLA) 2023-2024 fellowship program this month.  The RLA is a one-year program for mid-career faculty and staff seeking to interact with university leadership, learn more about strategic issues facing higher education, and examine and develop skills for enhanced leadership and organizational effectiveness.

Jimmy’s capstone project, RU-N Collective Empowerment Mentorship Program, explored the energy we, as humans, bring into our spaces and how the environment around us impacts us.  “Rutgers University – Newark (RU-N) has faced several challenges postpandemic, such as the lack of technical support, staff departures, and staff training that has left many new employees feeling disconnected from the rest of the RU-N community. To address these issues and better serve students and the community, student advisors need to reconnect and develop meaningful relationships with their peers. This is where the mentorship program comes in, by providing a supportive environment for student advisors to navigate workplace issues, develop professionally, and provide peer support to one another. The program includes both in-person meetings and virtual platforms to offer mentorship opportunities.

Check out Jimmy’s poster for additional information (page 4) and feel free to congratulate him on this great achievement.
