Newark, NJ has more than 37,000 SNAP recipient households among its residents, including 29,000 children. Rutgers University-Newark Staff Council recognizes the extreme needs of our community and wants to support their health and quality of life.  Please join us in support.

  • RU-N Food Rescue – If you have food leftover food at an RU-N event, don’t forget to support RU-N Food Rescue which sends notifications to students (requires submission 30 minutes before the end of your event)
  • Food NJCRI – share prepared food or donate items for Thanksgiving luncheon, drop off at RUPD by November 20

    • Emergency food packs – help for one or two days until the student can access the food pantry and other assistance resources. Packs are available to all students, no questions asked. Click here to view a map of emergency pack locations and hours. Emergency packs at RUPD are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Be sure to check the hours for all other locations. 
  • City of Newark
    • NJCRI Thanksgiving Community Lunch – November 21st, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., 393 Central Avenue, Newark, NJ 
    • Community Ward Food Hubs will begin operating on Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. 
      • South Ward – Belmont Runyon, 1 Belmont Way; South Improvement District; South Ward Promise; Clinton Hill Community Action

    • Emergency Assistance Program for Newark residents providing financial assistance up to $600 for necessities such as: utilities (water, gas, internet, etc.), rent/mortgage, transportation, childcare, co-pays, etc. (temporary program). Online application
